Hi Food Rebels,

Here’s an interesting statistic: in Europe, more chickens now live in factory farms than there are wild birds.

In numbers, there are 1.6 billion wild birds and there are 3 billion chicken industrially farmed in Europe (video here, in German though).

In other countries you’ll have similar ridiculous numbers, and they’ll get even worse.

If we now shift the view to the global land use of livestock you’ll find these numbers:

  • 26% of the ice-free terrestrial surface is used for grazing
  • 33% of arable land is needed to feed factory farmed animals
  • All in all livestock uses 70% or all agricultural land and 30% or the land surface on the planet (see here).

30%, guys!!

Now, even former mostly vegetarian countries like India and China are moving more and more towards meat. Plus, western countries keep eating like they don’t care.

Give it another 20 years like that and we’ll run into an ecological disaster. Even for an ordinary person that’s easy to foresee.

So, what to do? Well, there are a couple of ideas that I’d like to dive deeper into soon.

What’s clear is that we need some technical solutions (eg. lab grown meat), and until something like that is in sight, we need to eat more consciously.

For this Friday I’d like to inspire you with some of our favourite plant-based recipes for breakfast, lunch and dinner again.

Let’s all try to eat a bit more consciously and spread the word, be it just one or two meals vegan style, tomorrow!
