Here’s an interesting statistic: in Europe, more chickens now
In numbers, there are 1.6 billion wild birds and there are 3 billion chicken industrially farmed in Europe (video here, in German though).
In other countries you’ll have similar ridiculous numbers, and they’ll get even worse.
If we now shift the view to the global land use of livestock you’ll find these numbers:
- 26% of the ice-free terrestrial surface is used for grazing
- 33% of arable land is needed to feed factory farmed animals
- All in all livestock uses 70% or all agricultural land and 30% or the land surface on the planet (see here).
30%, guys!!
Now, even former mostly vegetarian countries like India and China are moving more and more towards meat. Plus, western countries keep eating like they don’t care.
Give it another 20 years like that and we’ll run into an ecological disaster. Even for an ordinary person that’s easy to foresee.
So, what to do? Well, there are a couple of ideas that I’d like to dive deeper into soon.
