I personally think that pies have to be one of the coziest, winteriest types of food, including sweet pies and savory vegetarian pies.

So this collection of our favourite vegetarian pie recipes feels like the perfect thing to be publishing at this time of year.

Plus, there are just so many good options when it comes to pie.

To cover them all, we’ve divided this list up into sweet vegetarian pie recipes and savory vegetarian pie recipes.

For sweet pies, there is everything from traditional apple pie and pecan pie to a very contemporary recipe for a chocolate swirl pumpkin pie.

Within the category of savory vegetarian pies, you have quiches, vegetable pies, vegan pot pies, vegetarian shepherds pie, and many more.

Beware the crust!

Before you go digging into these delicious vegetarian pies, make sure to pay attention to what’s in the crust recipe (or the store bought crust, no judgement)!

It can be difficult to find vegan pie crusts, since most have butter in them. And it’s even harder to find gluten-free pie crusts.

In fact, if you’re vegan or gluten-free, it’s probably best to make your own pie crusts.

I know making pastry can be daunting but we have full confidence in the recipes below.

  • Preheat the oven to 200°C/390°F.
  • Beat the eggs in a large bowl.
  • Add the garlic, nutmeg, onion powder, salt and pepper.
  • Grate the cheese.
  • Give it all a stir then mix in the spinach and cheese.
  • Make sure everything is thoroughly coated in egg and spice mix.
  • Pour into a 9 inch pie tin (grease with a little oil first), spread it evenly and get it in the oven!
  • Slice the tomatoes.
  • After about 20 minutes of cooking, take out the pie and layer the tomatoes on top.
  • Cook for another 15-20 mins.
  • When ready, sprinkle on the basil, oregano and a little more salt and pepper.
  • Done! Serve, and enjoy.
