When you are trying to lose weight, you know your taste buds are in for some trying times. Homemade trail mix, air-popped popcorn, plain whole grain crackers, and celery sticks are it. Am I right?

You know how it is… your goal is weight loss and you are focussed on it, razor sharp. You are nailing your breakfast, your lunch, your daily exercise routine, water, sleep…

But come tea time, everything goes out of the window.

Fixing a post-school snack for the kids becomes a losing battle as your deprived self inhales the unhealthy snacks and drinks the kids insist on eating (try them on these healthy kid-friendly vegetarian meals instead!). In go the potato chips and Ribena, down the toilet goes your regimented diet.

Rinse, lather, repeat.

Not anymore!

What if I can suggest a great way for you to avoid this circus, by giving you ideas for the right snacks that support a healthy lifestyle?

Low-calorie snacks can fit into a healthy diet!

Snacks that are healthy foods, that are a good source of protein, contain essential nutrients and enough grams of fiber to keep you satisfied, and are altogether the healthier alternative to support your weight loss goals.

What was that? “You must be joking, Dave, I want no dry rice cakes and hard-boiled eggs?” Well, you won’t.

When I say ‘healthy alternative’, I mean healthy snack options that will keep your blood sugar levels and energy levels on an even keel, easy snacks that won’t take you ages to put together, and healthy treat options that are also great fun to eat (like these delicious high-protein ball ideas).

According to James, our guy for all things nutrition, a healthy snack that supports your weight loss journey should contain:

  • At least 5g protein (the more the merrier!)
  • <3g saturated fat
  • minimum 2g fiber (again, the more the merrier!)
  • Between 200 – 250 kcals Per Serving

The idea is to aim for ‘natural snacks’ based on fruits, vegetables, wholegrain carbohydrates, dairy, etc – vegetable batons with hummus, avocado on toast, and such. Simple recipes that contain some nutritional value.

Top tip: try to stay away from any processed snacks or ones that include simple, non-nutritious forms of carbs like honey, maple syrup, or refined grains like white bread.

Healthy Questions!

What’s a good snack for losing belly fat?

Belly fat is a result of visceral fat that wraps around your vital organs such as the liver and the abdominal organs. To get rid of this harmful fat, our diet must be rich in unprocessed foods – whole grains, complex carbs, protein, and healthy fats.

How about Smashed cucumber and edamame? Or some creamy Mango lassi? Or some fresh Vietnamese spring rolls? Maybe some custard pudding with strawberries, if your sweet tooth is wanting some attention?

What’s the healthiest evening snack?

A snack that has got a good amount of protein (for extra high protein veggie snacks, look here) very little saturated fat, and isn’t too high in calories to tip your calorie deficient on its head is the healthiest snack.

Such as our avocado deviled eggs, baked ricotta muffins, vegan broccoli salad, or carrot and ginger soup, if you want something warming.

Can’t go wrong with any of these!

Is it okay to snack before bed?

Ideally, if weight loss is your goal, it is better to wind up your day’s eating at least a couple of hours prior to bedtime. Hitting the sack right after eating isn’t really conducive to weight loss.

If you really need to have something, going for something that will not require much effort from your digestive system is a good option. In that sense, the best healthy late-night snacks are soothing teas like chamomile tea and lavender tea, which will calm you down, ready to catch those Zs.

So, what do you think? Have I given you ideas for a delicious snack or two? The next time the hunger pang hits at 4.00 pm, ditch the junk food and go for any one of the great healthy snacks we have listed here.

Your waist and your heart (and your cholesterol levels!) will thank you!
