Oh Oatmeal, My Oatmeal

So what is so great about oatmeal? Is it particularly helpful for weight loss (if that is something of interest to you)?

Oatmeal is one of the traditional breakfast go-to’s that are filling and warming. The dietary fiber in oats keeps you full for a long time, getting you comfortably to your lunch break.

Oats are also awesome in cookies, overnight oats, flapjacks, muffins, oat bars, granola, etc, making them pretty versatile.

Apart from this, eating oatmeal also has some obvious health benefits. They have many vitamins and minerals (B vitamins, zinc, folate, etc to name a few), as well as essential amino acids.

In fact, one cup of oats contains 13 grams of protein. They are also good for your blood sugar and help reduce LDL cholesterol, thanks to the presence of soluble fiber beta-glucan.

There are different kinds of oats out there. You can get quick cooking oats that don’t more than a few minutes to cook or old-fashioned oats that take slightly longer to cook.

If you are now firmly Team Oats, let’s check out the low calorie oatmeal cookie recipes!

Prep Time:10 minutes
Cook Time:15 minutes
Total Time:25 minutes
Servings:12 cookies (roughly)
Calories:26kcal

Ingredients

  • 2 ripe banana
  • 1 cup rolled oats (oatmeal or porridge oats work really well)

Optional:

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 180°C (360°F)
  • Get a bowl and and mash the bananas until they’re mushy
    2 ripe banana
  • Add the cup of oats and any of the optional ingredients
1 cup rolled oats, 1 tsp cinnamon, 1 small handful raisins, 1 small handful walnuts, 1 small handful sesame seeds
  • Stir until everything is nicely mixed
  • Put baking paper on the tray so the cookies don’t stick. If you don’t have that make sure to grease the baking tray with butter (or olive oil if you’re vegan)
  • To make the cookie shape just grab a spoon and scoop a decent amount from the mixture onto the baking tray like I did in the photo above. It’s super quick and easy.
  • Off it goes into the oven for about 15 – 20 minutes.
  • Done!

NOTES

Please note that the nutritional information below is for the bananas and oats only and does not include any of the optional ingredients.
EQUIPMENT: You just need a solid baking tray and some parchment paper, cool as.
Feel free to add any other toppings as you see fit!
IF YOU LIKED THIS RECIPE: This was quicker and easier than you thought, right? If you like that style then you need to check out the Banana Egg Pancakes (also just 2 ingredients) or these Cinnamon Baked Pears (3 ingredients). Good food can be so simple. And if you still can’t get enough of oats, then you should start making lots of overnight oats in a jar batches! We’re addicted to them already 🙂 Adapted from The Burlap Bag (brilliant recipe, thanks!!)
Please note that the nutritional information below is for the bananas and oats only and does not include any of the optional ingredients.

Not Cookie Cutter Questions

There is no better snack than these healthy banana oatmeal cookies! They’re full of nutrients but they’re still easy and quick to make.

Are oatmeal cookies good for your diet?

Hit me with a loaded question, why don’t you? Yes and no. But let me elaborate.

Are cookies with fat and sugar good for you? Hmm, not really and you know it! But are they fun, do they add some joy to our lives? Hells yeah! We all need a bit of a sweet treat in our lives! So, in that sense, they are good for us, aren’t they?

But how to make them not wreck our diet is what we need to learn. This is why I have this handy compilation of low-calorie cookie recipes that won’t cross the 200 kcal mark. So you can eat any one of these healthy recipes for a light snack and still hit your calorie goals the rest of the day. Make sure you heed the serving size, though!

Are homemade oatmeal cookies better for you?

Better than the factory-processed ones that are pumped full of trans fats and sugars, definitely. These harm us in the long (and short!) run and it is in our best interests to reduce our consumption of processed stuff.

But, in my opinionit is ridiculous to say ‘never’ to any kind of food – especially the fun ones! So making them at home is the healthier alternative.

You can satisfy your sweet tooth and ensure that only the best ingredients go in there and none of the E numbers and unhealthy fats that aren’t really good for you.

If you are on the lookout for a healthy cookie recipe, your best bet is the homemade kind.

How long can you store a homemade cookie?

As, by definition, homemade cookies do not have any preservatives in them, they have a very short shelf life. This is actually a good thing, as the chemicals that help them live long on the supermarket shelves might not be doing our bodies any favor.

Store them in an airtight container for no more than 3-4 days, would be my advice. But, going by what happens in my kitchen, homemade cookies rarely stick around for long anyway as they tend to disappear into resident tummies rather quickly!

I hope you have as much fun trying out the low-calorie oatmeal cookies (and dare I say it, healthy oatmeal cookie recipes!) in this collection as I had in putting them together. Which one is your favorite? Which one goes in your family cooking bible?
