If I’m totally honest with you, vegan pizza recipes never appealed to me. The idea of a pizza without cheese seems a bit depressing, doesn’t it?
I certainly thought so…. until I actually began to look into vegan pizza recipes and discovered that there are so many delicious options!
The Best Vegan Cheese for the Best Vegan Pizza Recipes
It helps that there are more vegan cheeses on the market than ever before – check out the best cheese for vegan pizzas, grilled cheeses etc.
However, I would argue that cheese isn’t actually strictly necessary – lots of plant-based pizzas don’t use any plant-based cheese and are still super tasty (though if you do eat cheese, check out our veggie pizza recipes too!). This Broccoli Kale and Hazelnut pizza recipe is a great example.
Back to base-ics: Vegan Pizza Dough
Vegan pizza recipes start, of course, with vegan pizza dough. Luckily this is pretty easy to do, as most doughs are made from flour, water, olive oil and a bit of salt.
Some of the recipes in this round-up have instructions for making dough with wheat flour, however we have also included a section of gluten free vegan pizza recipes, such as this cauliflower vegan pizza crust.

Getting Saucy with Vegan Pizzas

Tip-Top Toppings
My go to for vegan pizza toppings is 100% roasted vegetables, because they are delicious, healthy and cheap (we’ve got a few good pizza recipes on our cheap veggie meals round up!).

Healthy vegan or vegetarian recipe for gluten-free socca pizza made with chickpea (besan) flour (one of my favorite veggie mediterranean recipes). It’s loaded with plant-based protein, easy to make and a delicious low-calorie treat!

Ingredients
Pizza base:
- 1 cup chickpea flour
- 1 cup warm water
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tbsp oil
- Pinch of salt
Toppings:
Choose your own. We love:
- 4 tbsp tomato paste (the thick stuff)
- 1-2 tbsp oregano, dried
- 1 small red onion
- 1 cup cheddar cheese (grated)
- ½ cup sweetcorn
- 1 handful olives
- 1 handful arugula (rocket)
- 1 tbsp basil, fresh (dried or more if fresh)
Instructions
- Mix together well the chickpea flour, warm water, garlic powder and baking powder. For best results, cover and leave to rest for thirty minutes. You can skip this step if pushed for time.
- Preheat the oven to 200°C/390°F and mix in the olive oil with the wet mix and a pinch of salt.
- Pour the mix into a baking tray with sides and parchment paper. Let it bake for about 8 minutes until it has started to slightly firm.
- Thinly slice the red onion and prepare the cheese, olives and sweetcorn.
- Remove the pizza base from the oven and spread the tomato paste over it sprinkle the dried oregano over it.
- Layer the other ingredients on top, including basil or favourite herbs – except the arugula/rocket, which we rinse and drain now.
- Cook for about another 12 minutes. When everything looks ready and the cheese has melted – pizza is ready! Remove from oven and garnish with arugula/rocket.
- Done. Enjoy!
