We all know the somewhat infamous ‘green smoothies’. The best vegetables for green smoothies are probably kale and fresh spinach, or other dark leafy greens. Kale and spinach are powerhouses of nutrition , so they make for a super healthy smoothie recipe, packed with vitamins and antioxidants.

Unfortunately, they aren’t always the most immediately appealing flavours, which is why green smoothies get a bit of a bad rep!

However, if you know how to make vegetable smoothies properly, you’ll find many a sneaky way to get all the nutritional goodness of greens in a vegetable smoothie that tastes good.

A great way to make veggie smoothies taste better is to add a bit of salt to any smoothie containing kale, as this cuts out bitterness from the raw kale.

If you’re looking for a place to start, we’ve found one of the best green smoothie recipes, which talks you through the building blocks of a delicious green smoothie. You can also find a lot of red vegetable smoothies, most of which take beetroot as a base.

Vegetable smoothies are also an easy way to help support your weight loss journey. They tend to be high in fibre (thanks to all the fresh fruit and veggies) and can be made low in fat and calories.

This is a great recipe for weight loss because it means they are filling without piling on the calories.

Let’s get into it: vegetable smoothies that taste good!

FAQs

What vegetables are good in a smoothie?

Leafy greens, like baby spinach, kale or swiss chard are good in a smoothie, because they are extremely nutrient dense but with a relatively bland flavor and a texture that breaks down easily.

Avocado is a great vegetable to add for creaminess. You can also incorporate harder vegetables like beetroot, broccoli and carrot.

Is drinking vegetable smoothies good for you?

Yes! You can access all the goodness of vegetables in a simple drink! Vegetable smoothies are usually high in fibre, which is good for your digestion, and high in vitamins and other nutrients contained in vegetables.

They should also be low in fat, if vegetables are the primary ingredient. If your smoothie recipe is high in fat, check whether that fat is unsaturated fat or saturated fat. If it is unsaturated fat it is still good for you, but if it is saturated fat, then steer clear!

Does blending destroy nutrients?

No! The nutrients found in fruit remain intact throughout the blending process, as does the fibre content.

There have been ideas floating around to the effect that blending speeds up the oxidation process, by which fruit when chopped and exposed to oxygen begins to lose nutritional value.

However, oxidation occurs over far longer periods of time than it takes to blend fruit and drink a smoothie, so the amount of nutrient loss you experience in that time is insignificant.

What is the healthiest vegetable blend?

A vegetable blend that includes leafy greens like spinach, kale and chard is always going to be super healthy. These greens are superfoods stuffed to the gunnels with iron, potassium and a plethora of vitamins.

Including a portion of leafy greens alongside a portion of another fruit/veg in a smoothie is sure to give you a super healthy breakfast.

What vegetables are good to blend together?

Spinach and avocado blend together well to make a creamy smoothie. Carrot and ginger also work well together, bringing you a tangy and refreshing drink. For something lighter, try cucumber, mint and pineapple!

Another creamy and delicious option is butternut squash/cooked pumpkin blended with banana.

  1. How can I get a smoothie to look like these in the pictures?? Which blenders are best for smoothies?

    1. Good question, I don’t have a favorite brand, but I would prefer a blender that can handle frozen fruit and ice cubes. I think that’s a big plus especially in summer. The some big brands are ninja, nutri bullet and blendtec. But I’m sure other brands have good blenders too 🙂
