Broccoli: the health benefits
First, let’s get the science-y bit out of the way, shall we? Broccoli, along with fellow weird-looking veg cauliflower, Christmas meal staple brussels sprouts, kale and cabbage, is collectively known as cruciferous vegetables.
Looking rather like a miniature tree, broccoli actually is a big hitter in the health food stakes.
It is packed to the rafters with fiber, vitamins (A,C,K and B9), minerals (potassium, phosphorous, and selenium), and bioactive compounds.
It also contains potent antioxidants that are helpful in preventing oxidative stress and cellular damage in our bodies.
The bioactive compounds present in broccoli help in lowering inflammation in our tissues, which is helpful in our fight against chronic diseases.
As if this wasn’t enough, cruciferous vegetables are brilliant in protecting us against various types of cancer.
Before you dash off to the supermarket, let’s get you set up with some of the best vegan broccoli recipes out there, for those following a plant-based diet.
Even if you aren’t into vegan diets, let me show you a great way (or 50!) to add this uber-healthy veg to your diet.
